The Golden Oldies Rugby scene hit the shores of South Africa, way back, during 1983 and was the brainchild of the late Fred Dieterle.

The first Golden Oldies festival was hosted by Villagers Rugby Club in Cape Town during 1983 with 16 teams and was a resounding success.

Shortly thereafter, The South African National Golden Oldies Rugby Association (SANGORA) was formed and the world of Veteran Rugby in the country was born.

To date approximately 150 teams from all around The Republic have affiliated to SANGORA and these stalwarts of the game come together once annually at the National Festival which is hosted by a different club every year.

The most recent National Festivals have seen close to 40 teams participating each year with this number sure to grow.

Golden Oldies Rugby is well represented in all provinces of SA and is alive and well.

Regular festivals are held in the various provinces where these Gentlemen exchange rugby skills on the field and social skills off the field.

The minimum age for players is 35 years and the maximum age is whatever you want it to be.

See: Rules & 10 Commandments of Golden Oldies Rugby

Each province has a SANGORA Representative - details of these members to be found on the  Contact Us page.

If you are KEEN…you are ELIGIBLE to play…

With regret, SANGORA wishes to announce that The 2020 National Golden Oldies Rugby Festival to be hosted by Bloemfontein Legends will be postponed to a date during the first quarter of the new year...the new dates will be announced within the coming week.

Bloemfontein Legends WILL still be the hosts of the revised event and we hope that Sentraal High School will still be able to accommodate us.

We understand the disappointment by ALL our crews BUT the COVID-19 pandemic has honestly thrown way too many negatives at us which are too many to list...you can imagine for yourself !!!

My Golden Oldies Rugby Folk, please understand that this was an extremely difficult decision to make, albeit 3 months away from our scheduled dates, but the risks are far too great for us and our Fraternity to take any chances.

It is believed that the virus will reach its peak during late August - September and we ARE NOT going to risk putting our beloved Folk in any unnecessary danger.

Further to this, we do understand that the lockdown period has placed huge financial strain on the majority of us and we feel that it would be unfair for players and spectators to be exposed to the dangers that this mess has caused.

Also, it would be unfair on the hosts for us to continue as originally planned and the turnout of teams is meagre which would result in a serious loss of revenue for them.

So Folk, I do sincerely apologise for the disappointment and we wish you all the health and safety that we can.

Please continue to conform to the restriction regulations of the pandemic and keep yourself and loved ones safe.

Teams that have paid accommodation deposits should make arrangements with their hosts to carry the deposit over to the new dates, when available, or request a refund.

I will be drafting an official SANGORA letter that teams can use where necessary.

Teams that have already paid for entry to Nationals 2020 may request for a refund from SANGORA by sending an email to: chairman@goldenoldiesrugby.co.za

Teams that do not request a refund from SANGORA will automatically be entered into the revised Nationals.

Rugby Regards
